Bob,

We went through the dickens last summer. To "stabilize" our licenses, we
went to a triad. Then for about 3 months nothing worked right. I had run
after run crash due to licenses dying. I estimate that I lost a minimum of
3-4 weeks of productivity in 3 months. Just before 5.5 released, our MIS
guys hit the sweet spot, and things are working very well now.

I think that there are better solutions, however. It seems to me that the
current license philosophy is a descendent of the hardware key days. The
license manager had to check regularly to make sure the key was in place.
Now with network management, it is reasonable to check out a license to a
user and validate it one time. Not every few minutes. Ansys needs to
understand that its customers are very weary of the problem. Last summer
conversations were beginning to address what other software products were
available to do the job. Changing horses is an expensive, annoying
proposition; but not getting our work done because of licensing is
unacceptable.
