Hi Kumar,
Actually your case begs for frictional contact for the following
reasons:
1) you focus on the plates and the load transmitted from one plate to
the other via the bolt will shift the bolt/flange
2) There is no preload - as you stated - so there is no locking
mechanism in the system to secure some of the bolt surfaces to the
mating parts. If you introduce an adequate preload in the system, then
I would use bonded contact - BUT STILL be very selective.
3) As the load shifts due to lack of preload so is the failure location.

(In essense you answered your own questions)....

Dear All,

Just a general query about what contact do you specify between the nut
and flange? Is it fair to assume that if in reality there is enough
pretension and the joint is tight, we can use bonded contact?

I am modeling using shell elements. We are using bolts to connect two
plates. A small cylinder connects the two plates to represent a bolt. I
have a small circular surface representing the nut which is in contact
with the plate. A bonded contact gives me a non-conservative result (low
stress) and a standard contact between nut and flange gives me a
conservative answer (high stress) in the plate. There is no preload in
my model. Also, the failure location is next to the bolt. My intent is
not to design the bolt or the preload but to design the plates. But the
type of contact affects the stresses in the plate. Could anyone please
share their thoughts or experiences?
