You shouldn't add more constraints just because it converges with them. Even if you get a converged solution, it doesn't do you any good if it doesn't represent the behavior of the lithosphere.
>From what you have described, the model looks like it is working correctly; you're just getting gross material yielding. If it's not replicating real world behavior, then some of your assumptions are wrong. It could be boundary conditions, or it could be material properties, or perhaps the material behavior model that you've chosen isn't applicable, or something else.
I don't really know enough about the behavior of the lithosphere to give sound advice on how to properly model it.
