Subject: STRUC: Superelement and cyclically symmetric structure - possible?
Author: Michael Magin

Hello Users,
I'm wondering if it is possible to use a superelement in a modal
analysis of a cyclically symmetric structure - let's say a gear drive
where the model of the driver is a 120ø sector and the driven is
fully modeled.
The Ansys manual says that "the basic sector must consist only of
finite elements; no superelements are allowed" (ch.3.14, structural
analysis guide), but as far as I understand this, the parts of the
model which are not "basic sectors" could be superelements.
Although I tried to build a superelement of the driven, everytime I
try to issue the cycgen-command, Ansys aborts with the error message
"Superelement file nnn ... .sub is not available".
What am I doing wrong, or is it impossible to use superelements in
the analysis of cyclically symmetric structures?

Any help in this regard is appreciated.
