Personally I'd go for a much bigger hard drive even if it means going to
EIDE rather than SCSI. 36Gb EIDE drives are now available at sensible
prices. 500Mb RAM is OK for up to approximately 500,000 DOF. I'd
suggest making sure that the motherboard and DIMM types enable you to go
to 1Gb without having to replace any of the existing RAM i.e. if the
motherboard has 4 DIMM slots make sure the RAM is supplied in 2 x 256Mb
modules not 4 x 128Mb. I'd say 8Mb graphics card would be fine with a
19" monitor, you might want more video memory with a 21" or larger
monitor to allow higher resolutions in a sensible number of colours.
I'm not yet convinced that the second processor is currently that useful
but in the future its likely to become more important as ANSYS improve
their SMP support for Intel NT.
