This IS somewhat misleading. WindowsNT for Alpha is a 32bit OS on a 64bit
system and has never been too popular. The Alpha is still the current
reference platform for the 64bit port of Windows2000 due next year (maybe).
Compaq has decided that they will reposition the Alpha as it high-end server
platform with True64 UNIX and as a low end unix workstation with Linux which
also has a clean 64bit port.

BM__MailDataCOMPAQ'S DUMP OF NT ON ALPHA NOT A SHOCK TO SOME

After pulling the plug on its development work for
Windows NT on the Alpha platform and informing
more than 100 employees of their termination last
week, Compaq's move met with mixed reaction
around the industry.

Dwindling revenue numbers coupled with the
announcement of high-powered eight-way Intel-based
servers last week combined to bring about the
demise of NT on Alpha.
