True, one of the best "upgrades" we got was CADFix for dealing with geometry
from CATIA. This one tool saved several days per moderate to large model.
On the other hand doubling our Octane's RAM once and then again also really
helped in running several ANSYS sessions at once.

I'd still like a faster box for those 18-36 hour contact analysis
problems...

Agreed. You want to throw the bucks at the bottleneck. If you
spend lots of time building models, maybe a better graphics
board or a seat of Femap is of more value than a faster CPU. A
fun one for me was when I went to bat for some hardware and
software upgrades so we could improve turnaround time. About
the time we got this in place, we upgraded Unigraphics from V9
to V10. The quality of the geometry we got went right in the
crapper. The time we saved with our new toys went into
redrawing all the CAD parts we were getting, for a net gain of
zippo. That was fun to try and explain!!
