Subject: Linux vs. WinNT - question for Sheldon I.

Dear Sheldon,

First of all, thanks for ansys.net!

Amazingly, it happened, for all the answers ansys.net provides, I
still do have a question: couldn't find did you use hdparm command to
optimize your hard drive's performance while benchmarking "Ansys 6.1
Linux vs. WinNT SP6a".

Background: I'm new to Linux and was searching for some answers on
tuning my installation, when stumbled up some info on very useful
hdparm command:

http://linux.oreillynet.com/pub/a/linux/2000/06/29/hdparm.html
or
http://pierre.mit.edu/compfac/linux/Securing-Optim
izing-Linux-RH-Edition-v1.3/chap6sec74.html

In short, these guides applied to my 2 hard drives improved it's
performance ~24% and ~31%.

Since Red Hat (apparently, any other distribution) is conservatively
installed (out of the box) and it does not utilize any advanced
features of the HD, it is possible that figures in your bench tests
would look quite different - even more favoring Linux.
