For some reason when starting 5.5 from the machine without the licence manager I got an error message. 5.4 would start OK. The error message was suggesting that the hostname on the ELMHOST variable may be miss-spelt or may be in the wrong case. This message was generated even after I tried changing case and simply re-writing the variable. (NT seems to always display the hostname in uppercase, but this doesn't mean it is stored this way!) In my case both machines are NT, but I guess that an NT workstation and UNIX server would give the same problem. Try removing the ELMHOST variable from the NT machine, then ANSYS will broadcast for the licence rather than trying to access the specified machine. This seems to have worked in my case.
Using ELMHOST seems to be an ANSYS Inc curve ball. I certainly wasted a lot of time following the installing of 5.5 getting two machines to use one licence, it appears to be far more complacent than at 5.4. I wonder just how extensively the licensing was tested prior to release?
