Ben

I am happily running ANSYS 5.5 on a Latitude, but you now have me wondering
about problems after installation. I use my Latitude as the license server
and have a desktop machine for serious number-crunching. That had problems
seeing the license server, problems that didn't occur with my 5.4
installation. In the end, after trashing the OS on the Latitude and fully
re-installing, I narrowed the problem to the ELMHOST variable, basically I
removed it. If you are not using a networked system you may not have set
this. The long hang does seem to be a network related problem. I have also
made my first network device (on the Latitude) a loopback adapter. ANSYS
"seems" to go for the IP address of the first adapter for its "ludicrous"
security key. Making the loopback adapter the first network device
generates the same server code on and off the network. Off the network you
get a service failed to start error, but that can be ignored.

ANSYS is now working fine, on and off the network and I have used my
Latitude for serious number crunching. In the office, it is left running
just as a desktop machine. Things are a bit spoilt by the vagaries of the
ANSYS licence key.

I don't suppose these blabberings are much use to you.

Chris
