very close

will still have an occasional problem, though
consider a hollow cylinder
4 keypoints
2 areas (one from 0 to 180 degrees & other from 180 to 360 degrees)
one area meshed and other one not

macro (here we go again with macros!) will pick both areas

thanks for taking the time to think about this
your suggestion is much simpler than what i've been doing
