Participation factors are effectively scale factors for the eigenmodes.
For base excitation the actual modal displacement under a specified
displacement is the product of the eigenvector, the participation factor
and the base displacement. The Mode Coefficient is the product of the
base displacement and the participation factor. The base displacement in
turn is the quotient of the acceleration and the square of the frequency.
You can get a quantitative notion of which modes respond in which
directions by checking for the largest participation factors. There are
analogous quantities for force excitation. The ANSYS docs show the
arithmetic.

Everyone should be interested in participation factors. Nothing makes my
wife smile at me adoringly like my detailed explanation of the
participation factor--try it at your next party.
