I would have said you have a higher chance of getting volumes with the
connection products (although they are not foolproof). I don't think
the quality of the volumes will be any different. My understanding is
that with IGES there is no information transferred about volumes. ANSYS
has to infer it when importing and try to reform the original volumes.

This is incorrect. Assuming you use the Alternative IGES import
capability then you can perform boolean operations.
